چکیده مقاله:

Background. Treatment options for lateral ankle sprains continue to evolve as advances are made in terms of techniques and materials. Objectives. This study was performed to evaluate clinical outcomes and satisfaction between two immobilization materials, semi-rigid cast, and elastic bandages. Methods. This study was a non-randomized controlled study. Fifty-four patients have undergone immobilization for their sprained ankle and divided into two groups according to the material selection. There were 27 patients in each group. VAS score, Karlsson score, satisfaction scale, and presence of later ankle instability was obtained. Standard descriptive measurement, independent samples t-test, and chi-square test were used for statistical analysis. Results. The mean age was 25.29 ± 6.04 years old. Sports injury was accounted for 27 patients (50%), followed by internal damage (24 patients; 44.4%). VAS and Karlsson's scores were taken and validated by authors and significantly better in semi-rigid cast groups compared with the elastic bandage group in the first week and second-week follow-up. No significant differences in overall satisfaction and ankle stability after one year. Conclusion. This study showed that the application of semi-rigid cast yielded quicker recovery in patients with ankle sprain without any decline in satisfaction scale. Therefore, a semi-rigid cast could be preferred over elastic bandage for acute ankle sprains.

Intrinsic Risk Factors of Lateral Ankle Sprain

CONTEXT Lateral ankle ligamentous sprain (LAS) is one of the most common injuries in recreational activities and competitive sports. Many studies have attempted to determine whether there are certain intrinsic factors that can predict LAS. However, no consensus has been reached on the predictive intrinsic factors. OBJECTIVE To identify the intrinsic risk factors of LAS by meta-analysis from d...

Functional instability following lateral ankle sprain.

Lateral ankle sprain (LAS) is an extremely common athletic injury. Despite extensive clinical and basic science research, the recurrence rate remains high. Functional instability (FI) following LAS is hypothesised to predispose individuals to reinjury because of neuromuscular deficits which result following injury. This paper provides an overview of the potential causes of FI which may manifest...

History of ankle sprain as a risk factor of future lateral ankle sprain in athletes.

Despite the attention and focus lateral ankle sprains receive in athletic training practice and research, they remain the most common injury in many sports. Whereas the functional limitations and time loss from lateral ankle sprains are apparent, consistently reducing their incidence is less certain. One important step in preventing lateral ankle sprains is identifying their risk factors. Altho...

The effect of taping versus semi-rigid bracing on patient outcome and satisfaction in ankle sprains: a prospective, randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Functional treatment is a widely used and generally accepted treatment for ankle sprain. A meta-analysis comparing the different functional treatment options could not make definitive conclusions regarding the effectiveness, and until now, little was known about patient satisfaction in relation to the outcome. METHODS Patients with acute ankle sprain received rest, ice, compression...
